The career of singer Lee "Shot" Williams goes back almost thirty-five years to 1962 when he recorded his first single.
He was born Henry Lee Williams in Lexington, Mississippi on May 21, 1938. He grew up in the country close to his cousin and fellow Blues man, Little Smokey Smothers. Lee "Shot" moved to Detroit in 1954, finished school, and relocated to Chicago in 1956. There he hooked up with Little Smokey who hired him as a regular vocalist with his band in 1961. This led to "Shot's" joining Magic Sam at the Tay May Club two or three years later. In 1965 he joined Earl Hooker and experienced his first taste of life on the road. Lee "Shot" then became the opening act for Bobby "Blue" Bland.
"Shot's" first real recording success was his hit single "I Like Your Style," released in 1969. Several more singles followed including the very popular "Drop Your Laundry Baby," which is still a staple on Black Southern radio.
Lee "Shot's" album releases include "Country Disco" for Henry Stone's TK label, and a Japanese release on Vivid Sound in 1994 entitled "A Shot of Rhythm and Blues." His release "Cold Shot" on Black Magic Records proved to be a turning point in his career. The album received wide critical acclaim and was voted the Best Blues Album of 1995 (New Recording - Soul / Blues) by the Living Blues readers' poll.
His first release on Ecko Records is appropriately entitled "Hot Shot." The songs are a mixture of Blues and Soul / R&B but "Shot" infuses each one with his own personality and soulful mastery. Highlights include the catchy lead off tune "I'll Take The Risk," the medium Blues "Make Me Holler" and the highly infectious "Down In The Hood."
